Odds to Win the National League Central

nl-central-oddsThe Milwaukee Brewers are currently on top of the Central division after spending most of last year being the talk of MLB for all the wrong reasons with OF Ryan Braun and his substance abuse violations.  This year Braun is back and the Brewers look very good as they have an impressive 24-14 record.

The Brewers are 5 ½ games up on the second place St Louis Cardinals and they would be smart to keep the pedal down and increase their lead on the Cards, seeing as how they have been a legitimate World Series contender for the better part of three seasons.  The Cards have one of the best rotations in the National League and have a lot of great young arms in the arsenal including Shelby Miller and Trevor Rosenthal.

The Reds are a surprising two games below the .500 mark however they may be given just the news the doctor ordered.  This weekend they got elite CP Aroldis Chapman back in the mix and he did not disappoint as he made his season debut striking out the side in the ninth inning to secure the save for the Reds.

The Chicago Cubs are doing their best to fill the void of “worst team in the National League” now that the Astros have departed for the AL.  The Cubs are already 10 ½ games back and are virtually out of any serious contending talks.

The remaining team in the division is a surprising one so far this season.  The Pittsburgh Pirates finished last season with an impressive 94 wins and many analysts predicted them to not only be a force in the division, but be serious contenders for a World Series.  The Pirates are loaded on both sides of the field with their NL MVP candidate Andrew McCutchen leading them both offensively and defensively with his ‘pure’ baseball ability.  They also boast one of the best young arms in the game in SP Gerrit Cole.  Some MLB analysts have even gone as far to say they believe Cole has what it takes to compete for the NL Cy Young this year.

The NL Central is a division that from one week to the next the standings could be reversed, and the key will be which team will be able to sustain their play down the stretch.
