NL West Futures Betting Odds

nl-west-futuresFor nearly a decade the only two teams people looked at to win when handicapping the NL West were the San Francisco Giants and the Los Angeles Dodgers.

After the first month and a half of the year the Giants are leading the division (25-14) and the Dodgers are 4 ½ games back.  The only difference this year is there is another team ahead of Los Angeles, and it’s none other than the Colorado Rockies.

The Dodgers were the team that most sportsbooks chose as World Series favourites, and who could argue that?  With an ace like Clayton Kershaw anchoring a starting rotation that also has Zack Greinke, Josh Beckett and Dan Haren, it’s hard to not have them as legit contenders.  However Kershaw signed his massive contract, and then hit the disabled list for a month before being activated against the Giants this past weekend.  The other problem is the hitters that are expected to lead the team offensively are all batting in the low .260’s.  Guys like Adrian Gonzalez, Hanley Ramirez, Matt Kemp and Carl Crawford are all well below their career averages.

The key to the success of the San Francisco Giants is simple…pitching!  The Giants’ starting five pitchers make nearly $80 million a year combined and are playing that way thus far.  Veteran offseason free agent SP Tim Hudson is enjoying a very nice bounce back year in the National League as he already has four wins and a spectacular 2.09 ERA.

1B Brandon Belt finally seems to be living up to expectations as he has been very solid and consistent, while the slimmed down Panda (Pablo Sandoval) is off to a terrible start but has always been known to have his bat heat up as does the California weather.

The Rockies are a very impressive 23-17 on the year and are beginning to look a lot more like the dominant team of the early 2000’s which had the likes of Todd Helton, Matt Holliday and Jeff Francis.

The Rockies of 2014 are led by SS Troy Tulowitzki who after forty games is having one of the best seasons in MLB history.  Tulo has a team leading 11 home runs and 33 RBI thus far, and all the while has his batting average flirting with the infamous .400 as it currently sits at .395.  Add this to the fact that 1B Justin Morneau has been rejuvenated and driving in runs while OF Carlos Gonzalez is playing like a beast.  The Rockies could very well be the team that sneaks out a division title.
