Netherlands vs Costa Rica Odds

netherlands-fansCosta Rica has managed to surprise us at every single turn in this World Cup, but when they face the Netherlands on Saturday, the surprises are likely to stop. The online sportsbooks that offer World Cup betting have set the Dutch team up as hefty favorites which leaves Costa Rica to once again take on the role of underdog, a position to which they are all too familiar. These two teams have never had the opportunity to face each other in the past so we can’t quote any former head to head statistics. We can, however, tell you that since the World Cup first took place in 1930, the team from the Netherlands has managed to put together three runner up finishes as well as a fourth place in 1998. The Costa Rican team, on the other hand, has only managed to qualify for the tournament on four occasions and regardless of whether or not they win on Saturday, the 2014 World Cup will go down as their best performance to date.

Netherlands vs. Costa Rica Betting Preview

There is absolutely no doubt that Costa Rica deserves and has fully earned their spot in the quarter-finals of the 2014 World Cup. Unfortunately, what they’ve run into with the Netherlands is a team that has the perfect recipe to dismantle the vehicle that Costa Rica has built to drive themselves this far into the tournament. That vehicle, of course, is their outstanding defense. The team that is ranked all the way back at 28th in the FIFA standings is well above the tournament team averages in clearances, recovered balls, tackles, and offside’s given. They also have the added notoriety of being the team with the lowest goals against total in the tournament at this stage. A title they share with Belgium.

The issue here for Costa Rica is that they really haven’t had any offense to speak of and the team that they are up against has the best offense in the business. With 12 goals scored in just these first four games, the Netherlands leads the way in scoring with Colombia and does so with noteworthy contributions from their star players. Both Robben and Persie have contributed three goals apiece and Memphis Depay has added two of his own. Even though the Dutch side has shown a lot of weakness on defense in this tournament, with the Costa Ricans not doing much in the way of goal scoring, getting past the Costa Ricans nearly impenetrable goal line once or twice should be enough to get the Netherlands off to the semi-finals.

As we mentioned earlier, there is a lot of support for the Dutch team right now. The World Cup betting community in Canada has so far laid down 47% of their action on the Netherlands. That number would be a lot higher were it not for the odds that Costa Rica is being offered up at. The underdogs are paying out at more than six times your money which has caused them to get a lot more action than usual. They are getting around 33% of the betting which has left the draw with a lot more action than usual as well. Close to 20% of the money is on the draw and perhaps many bettors are counting on Costa Rica’s weak offense and stupendous defense to keep them in a scoreless draw. Bloomberg Sports never predicted that the Costa Ricans would make it this far, but they are predicting that their run will come to a 2-0 end by the time the sun sets on Saturday. According to Bloomberg, there is an 83% chance that the Netherlands will come away with a birth in the semi-finals.

Netherlands vs. Costa Rica Total Goals Over Under Odds

The under is the favorite here which is a rarity when the Netherlands national football team is involved. Even if you add the meager five goals that Costa Rica has achieved thus far to the Dutch total during this tournament you come out to an average of 4.25 goals per game. Of course, things are a bit different now. There are no more teams like Chile and Mexico for the Dutch squad to beat up on. They’re now up against a defense that can finally give them a run for their money. A defense that went up against teams like Uruguay and England and walked away with clean sheets. Bloomberg Sports has produced some strong numbers that point towards this game having a total of just two goals. They are calling a 74% chance that the total will ellipse the 1.5 goal mark, but that these two have just a 48%  chance going over 2.5 goals.

Over 2.5 goals @ 2.00

Under 2.5 goals @ 1.73
